UX Paradigms for Critique

  • Look and feel (aesthetics)

    • Visual hierarchy

      • Is it clear what’s most important?  Next most important?

      • Are like things grouped together clearly?

      • Are the elements aligned to a clear grid/with each other?

      • Does negative space allow you to scan the content?  

      • Does the negative space show the appropriate grouping of content?

    • Color

      • Are the colors appropriate for this use?

      • Do the colors have the right amount of contrast for readability?

      • Do the colors highlight things right the right emphasis/priority?

    • Fonts

      • Are the fonts appropriate for this use?

      • Do the fonts, font sizes, and font colors convey the right visual priority?

  • Content

    • Imagery

      • do visuals tell the same story as the content?

    • Readable web-ready content

      • Are the fonts readable?

      • Is the text big enough?

        • How about on mobile?

      • Are there appropriate subheadings?

      • Can you scan the text and get the right idea?

      • Is there too much text?

    • Content Model

      • Are these the right things to prioritize for the user?

      • Is it clear what is important?

  • Accessibility

  • Organization (architecture)

    • Navigation and naming

      • Is it obvious and accurate where each nav element takes you?

      • Are there too many/too few nav items?

      • Does the navigation represent what the users or looking for or only what the organization wants to say?  - (card sorts for nav restructuring exercise)

    • visual hierarchy

  • Usability

    • How many steps to do important things?

    • Who are the users (and does this work for them)?

    • Consistency - Is the site consistent throughout? Does it follow platform conventions?

    • Can users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors?

    • Can this be simpler?

    • Were you frustrated at any point?

    • How much did you have to think about each step you took?
